The Mindset for Success.
Hi,

At all points of my career and more now as I interact with organizations and people, I encounter people who are living lives, which are so much less than what they are capable of. Many of them with great talents and abilities, sometimes even with greater opportunities (past or present), languish in cycles of frustration and failure.

Even when I look at myself I know that I could have done and achieved so much more. How about you?

Why then does this occur? Why do some people, who in their youth possess great potential, end up in this cycle? Why do they, as the realities of life and time take its toll, find themselves in places, no one would have thought looking at their talent and abilities?

As we explore this let me take you back to the good book which says, in Proverbs 4:23: Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life. Again, saying to us that our thoughts are essential as they control our very life and what progress we make.

Many of us love quotes. Here is a question for you? What do the following people have in common: Transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson, Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, supermarket magnate Frank Outlaw, spiritual teacher Gautama Buddha, Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher?

Each of these individuals has been credited with versions of the following quote:
“Watch your thoughts. They become words. Watch your words. They become deeds. Watch your deeds. They become habits. Watch your habits. They become your destiny.”

While many of us have heard this quote and/or the biblical verse that encourages and even strongly cautions us that, we do not pay close enough attention to the truth that these words possess.

Let's review the formula again.
We realize that the BE, Thoughts, and Faith come from the same place and are in effect the same as: our mindset, our perspective, our philosophy.

How then, do we condition, control or ensure we are building who we BEcome?

How do we manage our thoughts and mindset and increase our faith and belief system?

We do this by paying close attention to, and being mindful of, what we allow into our minds. In essence, this means controlling the environment in which we place ourselves.

Here is a process for working through controlling our environment and ensuring we create the kind of mindset and thought life that will ensure we make progress.

This three-step process and series of questions are essential to our ability to make the best use of our talents and abilities.

Step 1: Make a note of who and what influences you by answering these questions:
    1. Who do I spend a lot of time around and allow to influence me?
    2. What do I watch and read?
    3. What do I listen to?

Step 2: Determine the impact they are having on you by answering these questions:
    1. What do they have me thinking?
    2. What do they have me doing?
    3. Who do they have me becoming?
    4. Is that Ok?

Step 3: Based on the answers above, there are some decisions to be made:
    1. Do I need to reduce my association with these people and things?
    2. Do I need to increase my association with these people and things?
    3. Do I need to keep my association the same with those people and things?
    4. Do I need to eliminate my association all together?

This is a great exercise to reposition yourself and possibly move in a new direction and phase of your life.

Next week, we will look at the Actions we need to take as as the last component of the formula for making progress.
